Executive Summary
- Client: Australian Multi-Entity Group
- Service Provider: Sapphire Digital Accounting
- Engagement Areas: Group Consolidation | IFRS Technical Accounting | Revenue Recognition | Goodwill Impairment | Financial Modelling | Audit Support
Sapphire Digital Accounting supported an Australian multi-entity group with a range of complex financial reporting, technical accounting and statutory audit requirements.
Operating across subsidiaries and associated entities, the group required support with consolidated financial reporting, IFRS compliance, revenue recognition, goodwill impairment testing and the coordination of information across management, finance teams and external auditors.
The engagement brought together technical accounting expertise, financial modelling, detailed data analysis and structured audit support. By improving the quality, consistency and traceability of supporting information, Sapphire helped strengthen the group's reporting processes and audit readiness while supporting key reporting and audit deadlines.
The Client Situation
The client operates within a complex group structure comprising multiple subsidiaries and associated entities. Its finance function is responsible for IFRS-compliant financial reporting, monthly management reporting and annual statutory audit requirements.
As reporting requirements increased in complexity, several interconnected challenges needed to be addressed.
Group consolidation required different accounting treatments for subsidiaries and associates. Revenue recognition practices needed detailed assessment against IFRS 15. Goodwill impairment testing required a robust valuation model that did not previously exist. At the same time, financial and operational information had to be collected from multiple stakeholders and prepared to a standard capable of supporting detailed external audit scrutiny.
The challenge was therefore not simply to complete individual accounting tasks. It was to create reliable, transparent and well-supported financial information across several technically demanding workstreams while maintaining momentum through the reporting and audit cycle.
The Challenge
Complex Group Reporting
The group included both subsidiaries and associates, requiring different consolidation methodologies, including the application of equity accounting principles for associate investments. Consolidation adjustments, intercompany eliminations and supporting schedules also needed to be reviewed and prepared within IFRS reporting requirements.
Revenue Recognition Under IFRS 15
Certain projects had historically been accounted for using an over-time revenue recognition approach. Following review of contractual arrangements and performance obligations, an assessment was required to determine whether revenue should instead be recognised at a point in time where appropriate.
This involved reviewing contract terms, transfer-of-control indicators, customer acceptance provisions, project information and the underlying basis for existing revenue calculations.
Goodwill Impairment and Valuation
The group required an annual goodwill impairment assessment, but there was no existing Value in Use model or established framework available.
A new model therefore had to be developed using appropriate cash-flow forecasts, market-based assumptions, discount rates and sensitivity analysis, with every material assumption supported and calculations capable of being traced back to source evidence.
Audit Readiness and Information Coordination
Audit requests depended on information from multiple finance managers, operational teams and other stakeholders. Information was frequently received in different formats, with varying levels of completeness and supporting evidence.
This created additional pressure within already tight reporting timelines and required effective coordination between management, finance teams and the external auditors.
Sapphire Digital Accounting's Approach
Sapphire supported the engagement through four closely connected workstreams, combining technical accounting with structured data management, financial modelling and audit coordination.
1. Group Consolidation & IFRS Reporting
Sapphire supported the preparation and review of group financial consolidations across the client's entities. The work included:
- Reviewing consolidation adjustments and intercompany eliminations
- Supporting IFRS-compliant group reporting
- Applying appropriate consolidation treatment across subsidiaries and associates
- Supporting equity accounting for associate investments
- Preparing and reviewing financial reporting and audit schedules
This enabled subsidiary and associate entities to be appropriately incorporated within group reporting and contributed to the preparation of accurate and compliant consolidated financial information.
2. IFRS 15 Revenue Recognition Review
A detailed review was undertaken to assess whether existing revenue recognition practices appropriately reflected the contractual substance of individual projects and IFRS 15 requirements.
Sapphire's work included reviewing contractual terms and conditions, identifying performance obligations, assessing transfer-of-control indicators and evaluating customer acceptance provisions. Existing revenue calculations were then reassessed, with revenue schedules converted to a point-in-time basis where appropriate.
Underlying project information was consolidated and validated, inconsistencies were addressed and supporting schedules were prepared to demonstrate the basis of adjustments.
Technical accounting support papers and reconciliations were also developed to support discussions with management and external auditors.
The work helped align revenue recognition more closely with IFRS 15 requirements while providing greater transparency around the accounting conclusions and their supporting evidence.
3. Goodwill Impairment & Value in Use Modelling
With no existing impairment model available, Sapphire supported the development of a Value in Use framework from the ground up. The model incorporated:
- Historical financial performance
- Management forecasts
- Key operational and growth assumptions
- Market and industry inputs
- Weighted Average Cost of Capital considerations
- Risk-adjusted discount rates
- Discounted cash-flow calculations
- Terminal value assessment
- Sensitivity analysis
A WACC model was developed using inputs including risk-free rates, market risk premiums, cost of equity, cost of debt, capital structure considerations and entity-specific risk factors.
Sensitivity analysis was undertaken across key variables such as discount rates, long-term growth rates, forecast cash flows and terminal value assumptions to assess how changes could affect the recoverable amount and impairment conclusion.
Particular emphasis was placed on auditability.
Supporting schedules were prepared for material assumptions, calculations were linked to underlying evidence and cross-references were incorporated to enable reviewers to trace key figures back to their source documentation.
The result was a transparent and repeatable framework capable of supporting both management review and future impairment assessments.
4. Audit Support & Stakeholder Coordination
Technical accounting work was supported by a structured approach to audit coordination.
Sapphire acted as a central point of coordination across management, finance stakeholders and external auditors, helping manage information requests, outstanding deliverables and reporting deadlines.
Information received from different sources was reviewed before submission, with data consolidated, validated and reconciled where necessary. Supporting evidence was organised into a logical and auditable format to improve the consistency and reliability of submissions.
Support was also provided across technical accounting matters including consolidation, intercompany reconciliations, IFRS 15, goodwill impairment, equity accounting and financial statement disclosures.
Regular follow-ups, stakeholder meetings and timely escalation of critical issues helped maintain visibility and accountability throughout the audit process.
Outcomes & Value Delivered
Through the combined workstreams, Sapphire Digital Accounting helped the client strengthen both the technical quality of its financial reporting and the supporting processes around it.
Stronger Financial Reporting
The engagement supported group consolidated financial reporting across subsidiaries and associates and strengthened the application of IFRS requirements across technically complex reporting areas.
Improved IFRS 15 Compliance
Revenue recognition methodologies were reassessed against contractual arrangements and IFRS 15 principles, with revised calculations and supporting schedules prepared where appropriate. This improved the consistency and transparency of the revenue recognition process.
A Repeatable Impairment Framework
The newly developed VIU model provided a structured and fully traceable approach to goodwill impairment testing, supported by documented assumptions, valuation analysis and sensitivity testing. It also established a methodology that could be used for future impairment assessments.
Enhanced Audit Readiness
More structured documentation, reconciliations and supporting evidence improved the quality of audit submissions and helped reduce delays arising from incomplete or inconsistent information.
Greater Transparency
Traceable calculations, clearer technical documentation and structured working papers provided management and reviewers with better visibility into significant accounting judgements and assumptions.
Stronger Stakeholder Coordination
Structured tracking, follow-up and communication improved collaboration between finance teams, management and external auditors and supported progress against critical reporting and audit milestones.
